my body, my rules!

Malvika Mohanan who rose to fame in Malayalam films such as Nirnayakam and Pattam Pole, had her tamil debut in Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta.

Sharing a screen with Superstar Rajinikanth definitely has its perks, however, the overly-watchful eyes of some fans and their harsh criticism can sometimes lead to the downfall of one’s career.

Malvika is one of those talents determined to change things up! Not one to let that affect her career growth, the actress took to Instagram to post a picture from a photo-shoot in which she can be seen sporting a pair of denim shorts and a sleeveless top.

Many netizens made it a point to moral police Malvika’s dressing, telling her to dress properly. The following is the picture  that triggered a lot of hate from her audience:

Not being one to shut up and take abuse and hatred, Malvika did not hold back in giving the trollers a piece of her mind. In an act of retaliation, Malvika posted another photo from the same shoot and captioned it: "So many comments and opinions about how “a respectable girl should dress”. On that note, here, take one more picture of me sitting very respectably wearing whatever the hell I want to wear :) ."

As much as her approach in dealing with the matter can be labeled as ‘unorthodox’, we at Raaga can’t help thinking about the message Malvika is trying to send out to her followers.

my body, my rules!

We pay good money to watch movies for scenes and item songs in the cinema. Some of us even fill the theatre halls with resounding whistles and claps at the sight of female beauty gracing our screens. However, we are also the same society that is quick to point fingers and judge a woman’s character by her dressing and what she chooses to post on her social media without actually getting to know her.

Malvika’s choice in wardrobe may be unconventional in our culturally traditional society, but is that really the problem here? What needs to change? Society’s worldview that sexualizes a woman’s body, or women’s wardrobes?

Let us know your thoughts! Comment away, and as always, stay tuned with Raaga for more exciting updates.
