This month, we shine the spotlight on Arumai Nathan A/L Muniandy, popularly known as Lockup Nathan, a celebrated Malaysian musician, lyricist, and composer who has made significant contributions to the Tamil music industry locally and internationally.
Born and raised in Teluk Intan, Perak, Lockup Nathan’s musical journey began at the age of 13 when he learned to play the organ at the Simpang Ampat Bethony Home Church. His passion for music saw him performing at school functions before joining the stage as a singer in 1986. By 1987, he became a keyboardist and singer for the band Raaga Theebam, continuing to perform with other groups like City Band and Super Veenus until 1991.
In 1995, Nathan began composing for LOCKUP, leading to their debut album release in March 1996. This marked the start of a prolific career, contributing to 19 albums to date. As the first Malaysian Indian musician to commercialize pop music, Nathan carved out a unique space for himself in the industry. A major milestone came in 1999-2000, when he signed an international label deal with HMV Gramophone in Calcutta for LOCKUP’s fourth and fifth albums, making history as a Malaysian artist.
Lockup Nathan’s accomplishments are numerous:
- He was the first Malaysian composer to have his song concept accepted by India's Tamil cinema industry, with his track "Kokkorokko" featured in the movie Chocolate, under the music direction of Deva.
- He collaborated with South Indian composers such as Vijay Anthony, Accu, and Manikant Kadri and contributed to films like Summa Naccunu Yirukku.
- His compositions are registered with the Malaysian Author's Copyright Protection (MACP) and the Cine Musician Union of South India, marking his status as a pioneer among Malaysian Indian musicians.
Since 1986, Nathan has been a dynamic force in the music industry, inspiring future musicians with his innovative approach and dedication. He was also part of Malaysia's RTM Orchestra under Datuk Mokhzani for the program Getaran. In 2024, he received the Malaysian Indian Musicians Award for Keyboardist from the Persatuan Suara Artis Tamil Malaysia, further solidifying his status as an industry icon.
Nathan’s influence transcends borders, as he continues to inspire younger generations of musicians with his passion and talent. As a composer, lyricist, and performer, Lockup Nathan embodies the spirit of musical excellence and remains a proud representative of Malaysia on the global stage.

This appointment marks a significant moment for the Malaysian Indian music, recognizing his contributions and influence in the industry.
Under the Trade Ministry, RPM serves as a guiding body for performers, offering support on copyrights, development, and royalties.
