Escalator accidents, incidents and injuries have always involved children thus far with the reason behind it often being parental neglect. However, in a recent worrisome case, an adult woman was trapped in between the stairs of an escalator in the KL Sentral area.
A social media posting on the incident has since then gone viral, inciting the public’s fury on the company overseeing the escalator maintenance as many felt the well being and security of the public has been compromised as many make use of these amenities on a daily basis in the city.
Rapid KL has since released an official statement that apologizing for the incident and assuring the public that the malfunctioning escalator has been cordoned-off and that the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) under the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia has taken charge of the investigation.
Reports say the last maintenance done on the escalator was on September 28 this year and Rapid KL has promised to share the findings of the investigation once it is completed.
As a precautionary measure, Rapid KL is also conducting immediate internal inspection of all escalators in its assets which include LRT, MRT, Monorail and BRT stations.
So, the next time you’re on an escalator be extra careful or maybe just take the stairs instead.
