Suresh Selvathamby, who lost half his leg in a lorry accident when he was 13, became the world’s first champion in para archery after winning the World Archery Para Championships in the Netherlands in 2019.

The 27-year-old national archer defeated USA’s Eric Bennett in five sets and triumphed as the new world champion in the Recurve Men’s Open category at the 2019 World Archery Para Championships which took place from the 3rd till the 9th of June in Netherlands. Thus, earning his ticket to the Tokyo Paralympics. 

Suresh Selvathamby, Malaysia’s first world champion in para archery is among the 22 Malaysian athletes who will be in action at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. 

The para-archer will be competing in the men’s individual recurve, while the Sarawakian athlete known as Wiro Julin will take part in the men’s individual compound open category. 

Suresh, was quarantined after returning from the Para-Archery European Cup in the Czech Republic in July and unfortunately couldn't be with his wife during his childbirth. 

The national archer has been living and training at the Kompleks Sukan Negara and has not been able to meet his family due to the pandemic situation. After a long 6 months of video calls, he hopes to meet his newborn with the gold medal from the Tokyo Paralympics.

Suresh is warmed up and ready to bring home a gold medal from the Tokyo Paralympics!
