Like most festivals around the world, Chinese New Year is about families and tradition. Most of these traditions or activities are carried out till today in order to preserve the heritage of their ancestors and getting blessings for a better year. The Colour Red

We see red all around during Chinese New Year, and there is a reason to that. Red is not only associated with wealth and prosperity, but traditionally red decorations were also hung to scare off the mythical lion-like monster, Nian that is afraid of the colour red.

Reunion Dinner

One of the most important events during the Chinese New Year is a reunion dinner. No matter far, everyone must try their level best to make it back to their hometown and family on that day. Further to that, fish is a must have on the dinner table as its pronunciation in Chinese, “yu” meaning surplus in relation to abundance and wealth.

The gifting of hong bao is commonly seen among elders in the family giving it to the younger relatives. The money is usually packed in an even number, and the giver should be wished “gongxi facai”, meaning ‘Wishing you a prosperous New year’.

Housekeeping and Shopping

Right up till the New Year’s Eve, people will carry out a complete cleaning of the house and throwing away the old things. However, it is not advised to do any cleaning on New Year’s Day as it could mean you are sweeping away good luck and wealth. This will also be the time where malls will be packed as many celebrating the Chinese New Year will buy new clothes, food and snacks to stock up for the long festive week.

What we can learn from traditions is that it keeps families together, and it is a way for everyone to spend time doing these activities together.
