As Malaysians, the Merdeka Parade has always been one of the most exciting times of the year; with marching bands and celebrations sparking the fire patriotism in all of us.
This year, however, Senior Defense Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that there will be no parade held this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Such gatherings are huge, involving thousands of people. While restrictions can be imposed at the VVIP and VVIP guest areas, it can be very difficult for the crowd”, he said.
"For now, no green light is given to hold the parade. Hari Merdeka, as we know, is more than the parade. There are a host of activities that can be held including the launch of flying the Jalur Gemilang (campaign)," The Minister added.
Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah is expected to make announcements on these programmes in detail and the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) involved soon.
