Everyone makes mistakes. We're only human, after all, and there are some mistakes that are more common than others.

Grammatical mistakes and misused vocabulary top the list. Here are some English words and phrases that are the most misused ones:

#1 Adverse

Many people confuse this with 'averse'. Adverse means detrimental, whereas averse means disinclined.

#2 Appraise

Appraise and apprise have very different meanings. You appraise something, as in you assess the quality of a product. Apprise means inform.

#3 Beg the question

When you say that someone 'begs the question', it means that he or she made a conclusion based on a premise that lacks support. It's commonly used interchangeably with 'raise the question', which is incorrect.

#4 Bemused

Feeling bemused is not the same as being amused. Feeling bemused means that you feel bewildered.

#5 Cliché

Many of us describe something as being 'cliché', which is incorrect because cliché is a noun and not an adjective.

#6 Data

Data is a plural noun. It's singular form is datum.
