Since enforcement of the movement control order (MCO), many Malaysians have been complaining about weight gain, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering that most were homebound and less active physically.

The issue of obesity is nothing new in Malaysia or in the world for that matter. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), obesity has been a global public health concern since 1975. The concern is understandable as obesity not only increases the risk of contracting various chronic diseases but also puts a strain on the finances of governments in terms of healthcare allocations.

Recently according to a statistic shared by Public Health Malaysia on their Facebook page, Malaysian Indians share the highest obesity rate at 43.5%. This is largely due to the lack of awareness on how to maintain a healthy diet and health care. These factors lead to health problems as the rate of obesity and diabetes continued to rise each year.
Some even chose not to share their recent photographs on social media to avoid receiving criticism from their friends. Immediate action must be taken to overcome this situation and improve the community’s health. Choose a healthier life style with more physical activities and a healthy diet.
