A sinkhole the size of an Olympic pool appeared in the middle of a busy street in Fukuoka, Japan, last Tuesday. Fortunately, no one was injured when this happened.

The authorities believe that this was probably caused by the construction works for an underground train line nearby. Nevertheless, the city acted on repairing this immediately.

In 48 hours, the sinkhole was filled and repaired. The authorities then used the next few days to conduct tests on the determine the safety of the repaired section. It was finally declared safe and opened to the public yesterday.

The mayor of the city apologised for the inconveniences caused, also confirming that the repaired section is now 30 times stronger. The authorities will also establish a panel to investigate the exact cause of this incident.
