Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned as the 70th Miss Universe at the pageant held on the night between Dec 12 and Dec 13 at Israel's southernmost resort city of Eila.
Sandhu, a 21-year-old actress and model, topped a field of some 80 contestants in a pageant and won a third title for her country, following previous Indian wins in 1994 and 2000. Miss Universe is born in the state of Punjab in northwestern India, Sandhu is the daughter of a gynaecologist, and grew up working with her mother at medical camps, addressing women's health and menstrual hygiene, according to the official website of Miss Universe.

The annual international event also showcased traditional elements and national costumes, swimwear as well as a series of interview questions to test participants' public speaking skills.
Harnaaz Sandhu beat 80 contestants, including first runner-up Miss Paraguay Nadia Ferreira, and second runner-up Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane, to make it to the top. She was crowned by the previously reigning Miss Universe, Mexico's Andrea Meza.
