According to the latest study published in the journal BMJ, the more fat you carry around your mid-section, the more likely you are to die early from medical problems.
This is the largest study of its kind to be carried out till date.
Death risk increases accordingly with waist circumference, whether the participants were overweight or not. The research suggests that belly fat is particularly dangerous and a more accurate indicator of health than weight or body mass index.

There is a strong association between belly fat and a range of diseases, including diabetes, some types of cancer, and even age-related dementias. But it is not clear whether the increase in death risk associated with abdominal obesity occurs independently from recognized risk factors like general obesity.
On the contrary, bigger hips and thighs are associated with a lower risk of early death. This is largely because fats that are found around these particular areas can actually help to stabilize cholesterol levels and sugar levels in the blood.
Recently, according to statistics shared by Public Health Malaysia on their Facebook page, Malaysian Indians share the highest obesity rate at 43.5%. This is largely due to the lack of awareness on healthy diet and health care, and these factors lead to health problems as the rate of obesity and diabetes continue to rise each year.
