According to mythology, Kumbhakarna was granted a sleeping bed from the Lord Brahma and once that happened, Kumbhakarna slept for 6 months and stayed awake for the next 6 months.

A similar incident of unusually long slumber has taken place.

A man from Rajasthan, India,  reportedly sleeps for 20-25 days a month, or 300 days a year, due to a rare medical condition called Axis Hypersomnia.

Dubbed as a real-life ‘Kumbhakarna’ by villagers, Purkharam, 42, a resident of Bhadwa village, is able to operate his grocery shop just five days a month, reported Zee News.

Axis Hypersomnia can be described as a chronic neurological sleep disorder that leads to daytime sleepiness and/or long sleep hours (more than 9-10 hours in 24-hours).

Purkharam's family reached out for medical help when he slept excessively during the initial days of the condition. He was sleeping for 15 hours a day at that time. Over the years, the period of sleep increased by several hours and progressed for several days. His symptoms worsened to a point that he now sleeps for 20 to 25 days in a row.

The family members have to feed and bathe him while he is asleep. In fact, he might even fall asleep while he is at work. Purkharam’s wife Lichmi Devi and his mother Kanvari Devi hope that he will recover soon and live a normal life like before.
