Deepavali is nearing! And you’d know that not only because of festive songs and keeping track of your calendar… it’s because your mother is already nagging you about the many things you’ll have to do!

Here are seven of them that we’re all too familiar with:

#1 “Have you bought your new clothes yet?!”

You’ve been putting it off forever, but she’s gonna check your closet and find out that you don’t have your outfit ready for Deepavali!

#2 “Come follow me get new clothes for your paati and taata!”

Yeah, it’s not just you that’s gonna be dressing up for Deepavali.

#3 “Have you mopped the floor? Dusted off the windows? Cleaned the whole house?”

You already need to start making your house spanking clean like it’s new for your visitors!

#4 “Come help stir the dough for murukku and cookies!”

At least you’ll get rewarded with yummy cookies after you’re done helping.

#5 “Go buy us the pooja items!”

Before the day itself, you’ll have to start preparing items for Deepavali prayers such as coconut, betel leaves, sandalwood paste and candles.

#6 “Don’t forget to change the curtains, bedsheets and cushions!”

Your mum will expect an almost total overhaul of the house.

#7 “Start putting money into the ang pow!”

Get a head start into doing this especially if you have a lot of cousins, nephews and nieces.

We know that our mother means well when they nag—it’s all so that everyone has a good time on Deepavali.
