Life is such that we don’t get to choose the conditions that we’re born into… but we can do something to change things for the better. While looking for stories of inspiring Malaysians for our DIGIyin Saathanai Hero-kkal campaign, we were introduced to a man, who refused to let poverty rule his life.
Meet Vasan a/l S Angalan. Growing up in a poor family, Vasan had his work cut out for him. Yet, however tough life became, he knew he wasn’t going to let poverty define who he is. After graduating from higher education, he started building a career in the creative arts, specialising in art sculpting, and culinary and ice carving.

In his 30s, more success came Vasan’s way. He was awarded with five Malaysia Book of Records feat and an Asia Book of Records title. Some of his impressive artworks included the biggest chocolate carving, the longest fruit carving, and the biggest ice carving dining table. He received recognition from members of the royal family for his cake decorations too!

Continuing to sharpen his skills, his career soon took him to countries like Japan, China, Germany and Russia to participate in international ice sculpting competitions.
Two years ago, in 2018, Vasan earned his proudest recognition ever—he came in second in an ice sculpture competition in Russia that saw him competing against professionals from 30 countries. No easy feat considering that the man was sculpting ice under pressure and in extreme cold—it was -45˚C to be exact!

Today, still armed with determination, the 52-year-old father continues to work harder to reach greater heights. And boy, what an inspiring story he’ll have to tell his family when he’s old, retired and probably living in a house decorated with many more world records.
