An elderly man in India carved out a 3-km-long canal to help water fields; by directing flowing rainwater from the nearby hills to his village, Kothilawa in Lahthua area of Gaya.
During the rainy season, Bhuiyan, the elderly man noticed water flow from the mountains used to flow into the river. The potential waste of bothered him. Putting it to better use, he thought of carving out a canal to save water coming from the mountains and utilize it for crops instead.
For 30 long years he had worked hard, believing in his vision. “For the last 30 years, I would go to the nearby jungle to tend to my cattle and dig out the canal. No one joined me in this endeavor. Villagers are going to the cities to earn a livelihood but I decided to stay back,” he said.
Recently, he successfully completed the canal; which largely benefited animals and the fields in the village as well. A single man has changed the lives of the entire village for the better.
