As most Indians live by the saying ‘Maatha, Pitha, Guru, Dheivam’, Malaysians are ingrained with a mentality of respect and honor towards the teaching profession. Many would regard their teachers to be the individuals that rank next to their parents in the hierarchy of love and respect. However, it is a rare case that a teacher would reciprocate such love towards their students.

In such a rare case, a lecturer serving at University Malaysia Sabah, Dr. Bamini KPD Balakrishnan went out of her way to show solidarity and support for her student who is a cancer patient.

20-year-old Richelle Hii Hua Yin was diagnosed with bone cancer earlier this year in February. Following the discovery, the young maiden has undergone eight sessions of chemotherapy and has a couple more pending.

Bamini, who is the head of the Marketing programme offered at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy shaved her head in support of her cancer-stricken student.

Despite the many speculations labeling her show of love and kindness as an act, Bamini said she had no intentions of gaining popularity through her action that she didn’t expect would get picked up by local media channels.

In a statement released by University Sabah Malaysia, Bamini said she just wanted to remind her student, Richelle, that she need to continuously be brave through this tough time and the she isn’t alone.

Bamini’s act was a timely support towards Richelle as the youngster recently received news that the cancer has now spread to her lungs.

In a report by Harian Metro, Richelle was said to have expressed her shock and disbelief that her lecturer would go as far as shaving off all her hair in show of solidarity towards a mere student.
“After I received her picture through WhatsApp, I immediately contacted her (Bamini) and cried because I was so touched by her support,” the 20-year-old was quoted as saying.

So much love, we really can’t help feeling touched ourselves! Dear Richelle, our prayers are always with you as you brave through this trying time!
