Recently a 40-year-old elephant was killed after being set on fire by a villager in Tamil Nadu, India. The villager had reportedly thrown a burning piece of cloth to chase away the elephant. The burning cloth got stuck on the elephant’s ear, forcing the gentle giant to run away in distress. The horrifying incident, which took place in Masinagudi in Nilgiris, India, was captured on video.
A few days ago, the elephant was spotted groaning in pain near the Singara forest range. Locals at Bokkapuram alerted the local forest officials, who reached the spot and tranquilized the animal for treatment. The officials spotted several wounds on the animal’s back.
With the help of four others, the officials decided to shift the injured elephant to a nearby elephant camp for further treatment. However, the elephant died while being transported. A post-mortem examination revealed that the gentle giant had sustained deep wounds on its back. The doctors, who conducted the post-mortem, noticed a gash on its left ear and said the death could have come from unbearable pain.
Another video related to the incident had gone viral, where a forest guard is seen bidding a tearful goodbye to the elephant after its death. The heart-moving video shows him crying and gently stroking the elephant’s trunk… and between his farewells, saying “Whom will I give out fruits, after this?”
The viral video of the incident sent shockwaves across social media, with netizens demanding justice for the elephant. Three people were found to have been involved in the incident. Local authorities have arrested two, including the owner of a resort where the incident had took place, and are on the look-out for the third person.
