Yesterday on Bigg Boss 3, the world saw the second un-nominated eviction of the season. One of the favourites of this season, Jangiri Madhumita was decidedly evicted from the game show for self-harming.
The 36-year-old was reportedly evicted with immediate effect as she resorted to slash her forearm. Some netizens and followers of the show have been coming to her support citing reasons that in the instance of self-harming, the victim should not be blamed and that Madhumita was exposed to hostility in the Bigg Boss house, which was the driving factor behind her decision to cut herself.
In recap of this week’s happenings, Vanitha who was previously evicted was welcomed once again on the Bigg Boss set as a visiting guest as the other participants were tasked with transforming the Bigg Boss house into a hotel and to provide hotel related services for their visiting guest to acquire their luxury budget.
Upon Vanitha’s entry into the house, discussion revolving around ‘mind games’ between her and Madhumita were an ongoing thing, with both citing that the men in the house were using the emotional volatility of the female contestants in the house as a weapon to subdue them and keep them behind in the game.
Following these discussions, Madhumita got into a lot of quarrels with her fellow housemates, which definitely did make her feel isolated. However, the million-dollar question is, what caused this isolation? Was this the only reason that led to her episode of self harm?
Word on the street is that during one of the tasks, Madhumita spoke of the cultural situation in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka without any regards for Sherin, a contestant from the north. The game-makers were of the opinion that whatever Madhumita said was not relevant to the task and that she should change her answer as they would not be able to telecast what she said. Madhumita reportedly refused to change her answer and proceeded to cut herself following that, to prove that she feels strongly about the matter.
Kamal Hassan acting as the program mediator did a great job to point out that self-harm is never the solution to putting forth one’s personal opinions or to make one’s self be heard in a crowd and we truly stand by him in that.
Just like Meera who used the ‘sexual harassment’ card against director Cheran who evidently did no such thing, Madhumita used ‘self-harm’ as a ploy to make her point. Not only were her actions extreme, it took away from the seriousness of self-harm that experts have time and again marked as the beginning point of the suicide epidemic.
Being suicidal and self-harming is an actual medical condition and should not be used as a ploy to make a point or to champion one’s opinion.
To all our beloved readers, please seek help should you ever feel like harming yourself as hurting yourself is not going to help you heal from the pain. Although she was a season favourite, Madhumita is no example to follow and we at RAAGA stand by this strongly.
