Have you ever wondered what is part of a lawyer’s job scope? Going to court and speaking before a jury aren’t the only things a lawyer does.
In this story, we’re introducing you to Revathi Kannan and focusing on her contributions as a law professional. Having received multiple achievements in the legal industry, she makes a fitting addition to the list of unsung heroes from the DIGIyin Saathanai Hero-kkal campaign.
Revathi hails from Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan and has been practising law for the past 12 years. As one of the top STPM students in her home state, she continued to excel after graduating with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from University of Malaya.
She was admitted into the High Court of Malaya as an Advocate and Solicitor in 2009, and her career has been progressing since then. She started as a Legal Associate and subsequently joined another legal firm as a Senior Legal Associate.

Besides working in a law firm, she also had corporate experience working in the legal department of a government-linked company in Malaysia. However, after working for a number of years in different establishments, Revathi decided to make her 30th birth year extra special by starting her own law firm called Revathi and Partners.
Since then, her firm has developed into one of the leading medium boutique firms in the area of civil litigation law practice.

In addition to running the law firm, Revathi also wears many other hats to help and serve the community.
In 2019, she was appointed by the non-profit, non-governmental Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) as an adjudicator of payment dispute pertaining to construction cases. Last year, she also became the visiting lecturer at University Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) to educate law students on the subject of Civil Procedure.
Additionally, she played a big role in assisting the university to be recognised by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board, as well as for their Bachelor of Law (LLB) graduates to be recognised and exempted from the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) examination.
In her latest achievements this year, Revathi was appointed as a member of the Professional Development and Education Committee (PDEC), and a Fellow and Certified Practitioner (Adjudicator) by the Asian Institute of Alternate Dispute Resolution (AIADR).
The AIADR is an organisation endorsed by the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO), which consists of 47 member states from Asia and Africa, including Malaysia, China, Indonesia, and other countries in East Asia… making her accomplishment a pretty amazing feat!

In fact, she is currently working with a well-known publisher that specialises in law publications called Current Law Journal Malaysia to write a book on Family Law in Malaysia. The book is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2022, so look out for it if you’re interested.

Despite her busy schedule, Revathi takes her social responsibility seriously as a legal professional by giving talks on legal awareness on local and international platforms. She covers topics like family law, criminal law, banking law, employment law, medical law, cyber law, trust law, contract law, insurance law, Intellectual Property (IP) law, and other civil law issues.
To date, she has made more than 100 appearances on many local programmes to educate and spread awareness! And we trust that Revathi’s inspiring list of achievements will continue expanding in the coming years.
