The extent of damage caused by floods is devastating. In August of this year, Kerala, located in South India, was hit by the worst flooding it has ever had this year in nearly a century, with over 480 people dying and a million evacuated.

Recognising the damage and suffering the people of Kerala are facing, the Joyalukkas Foundation has taken up the humanitarian responsibility to donate 150 million Rupees (RM8.4 million) so that 250 houses would be built for those who have lost their homes. Each house will have an area of 600 square feet with two bedrooms, living room and a kitchen with concrete roof.

The project is a show of support for the government of Kerala’s initiative in rebuilding the place. It’s also an extension of The Joyalukkas Foundation’s philanthropic movement that’s involved in voluntary blood donation, protection of the environment, and healthcare.

While Kerala works to rebuild itself from the flood, our country Malaysia is getting caught in flood troubles too. Recently, the rainy season has seen water spilling into roads and troubling commuters. But we shouldn’t just be complaining about traffic jams.

Take a look at the dangers of flooding that we should be aware of:

#1 Contamination

Don’t feel relieved yet once the floodwaters recede. Hazardous materials such as pesticides, sharp debris, fuel and sewage would’ve contaminated the landscape. This will expose people to diseases and unwanted accidents.

#2 Faulty electrical wiring

It’s likely that electrical equipment submerged in flooding is damaged. Without precaution taken, reactivating it can cause electrocution or shock.

#3 Still water

Still water causes mosquitoes to breed and dengue fever to spread. Exposure to them can also cause wounds and rashes to be infected. Drinking anything that’s contaminated by flood water may also cause illnesses such as diarrhoea.

#4 Creatures

Mosquitoes aren’t the only insects you should be aware of during a flood. Remember that other animals such as rodents and poisonous reptiles lost their homes. Be aware of your surroundings so that you can keep a distance.

#5 Psychological stress

During a natural disaster, you may experience stress that comes from being worried about yourself, loved ones, and cleaning up your home once the water recedes. The effects may be having difficulty to sleep, crying, and your thoughts being muddled, making it hard to listen to people.

#6 Burglaries

With homes and shops left empty, burglaries may happen during a natural disaster like flooding. When returning to your home, make sure to keep yourself alert for your own safety.

#7 Drowning

Children (and even adults) may find the idea of swimming in floodwater fun or safe. They may not be aware that the water may be too deep and there’s a risk of drowning.

Now that you’re equipped with these information, take the precaution necessary and stay safe.
