Elephants are majestic creatures, considered as a symbol of wisdom in many cultures. Sabah is home to the Borneo pygmy elephant, with a population of 2,000 recorded some 12 years ago.
Recently , Dr Sen Narthan the Sabah Wildlife Department deputy director has revealed shocking news — 50 to 60 elephants reported dead in the last 10 years in Sabah had met their demise through poisoning!
“Every elephant in the state is exposed to poison, either from plants, the environment or the plantation area,” he added .
The department is working with the national poison center in the research and investigation of elephant poisoning in Sabah, with investigations to go on full swing in August.
“But we will continue the project later to determine the cause of elephant poisoning,” the deputy director said.
The investigation will be focused on finding out if the poisonings were intentional, as farming in the area does not raise concerns as they are most adapted to an elephant-friendly approach. The Malaysian Palm Oil Council will fund the research.
Hopefully elephants will be protected, and the population will grow in the near future.
