Selvaraghavan is one of the most critically acclaimed directors in recent time. Selva started off as a writer for his father's directorial venture Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002) which stars his brother Dhanush. Selvaraghavan went on to make a series of romantic drama films with Kadhal Kondein (2003) and 7G Rainbow Colony (2004) before also venturing into timeless classics films like Pudhupettai (2006) and Mayakkam Enna (2011). The ace director has also experimented with fantasy films Aayirathil Oruvan (2010) and Irandam Ulagam (2013).
Here are the top 3 films of Selvaraghavan that you simply must watch!
Ayirathil Oruvan
Ayirathil Oruvan is the story of a team of top Indian officials undertaking an epic search to find the lost Chola tribe — a film that is by far one of the most underrated movies in the history of modern Tamil cinema. The fantasy drama deserved a lot more love and applause than it received during its theatrical premiere in 2010. The film has developed a cult fan following, which seems to be growing bigger with the film’s sequel announced.
Mayakkam Enna
One would say this is Selvaraghavan’s best work to date. The director has beautifully crafted the film expressing the suffering of an artist, who drowns himself in self-pity and alcohol. The director takes us to pretty dark places as he explores the depths of the hero’s insecurities.
7G Rainbow Colony
Selvaraghavan’s tragic romantic drama speaks to people from different generations. The film is set in the backdrop of a crowded apartment in India. The story revolves around Kadhir who is a young underachiever who frequently vents his frustrations through public outbursts. When Anitha moves to his neighborhood, he falls in love with her, but she keeps rejecting him.
The director’s outstanding observation and accuracy of the middle-class households in the film was appreciated by many critics.
Kaadhal Kondein
The unrequited love of an orphaned mathematical genius, who turns dangerous in the name of love is a story that took everyone by surprise when it was released in 2003. The film introduced us to the concept of “friend-zone” way before it became a norm.
