Devanesan Chokkalingam, commonly known as Deva, is a south Indian singer and composer who primarily worked on Tamil film. In a career spanning roughly 36 years, he has composed songs and produced background music for Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam films. He composed the music for more than 400 films.

Deva spent some time working in the television industry before entering to film. Manasukketha Maharasa, his debut movie, came out in 1989. Later, he received an offer to work in the film Vaigasi Poranthachu and after the movie's release his name spread throughout the Tamil community. The great music composer M. S. Viswanathan called him “Thenisai Thendral”, or the breeze of sweet music. He received a lot of appreciation for the music he composed for the Rajinikanth-starring films Annamalai (1992) and Baashha (1995).

Through his gaana songs, Deva has served to make the lives of the people in North Madras more relatable.  Deva diligently recorded every emotion via his gaana songs, including love, sorrow, celebration, joy, friendship, and betrayal. Some of his well-known gaana songs include Kavalai Padadhey Sagodhara (Kadhal Kottai, 1996), Pillayarpatti Hero Needhan (Vaanmathi, 1996), Annanagaru Aandalu (Kaalamellam Kadhal Vaazhga, 1997), and Vidha Vidhama Soapu Seepu (Kadhaley Nimmadhi, 1998) and Meenatchi Meenatchi (Aananda Poongatre, 1999). The intriguing thing about Deva's gaana songs is that even people who vehemently deny being lovers of them are aware of the song, its lyrics, and occasionally are even caught murmuring a few phrases. It only serves to highlight how these songs have permeated popular culture.

As much as it belonged to A. R. Rahman, the 1990s belonged to Deva. Deva wrote the music for 36 different films in 1996. His scores in movies such as Aasai (1995), Kadhal Kottai (1996), Nerrukku Ner (1997), Ninaithen Vandhai (1998), Priyamudan (1998), Vaalee (1999), and Kushi (2000) that played by Deva helped actors like Ajith and Vijay to become the next generation of superstars.

Deva won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director for the first time in 1990. In1992, Kalaimamani Award was presented to him by the Tamil Nadu government. Aasai brought him another state film award in 1995. He won the Tamil Nadu Arts and Cultural Academy Award for his performance in Baashha. For Sivappu Mazhai, the world's fastest movie from script to screening, he was presented with a Guinness World Records trophy. Awards from well-known publications like Dinakaran, Cinema Express, and Screen also acknowledged him.
