Man City hope to sign Messi amid Barcelona troubles

Feb 06, 2020

Man City are reportedly monitoring Lionel Messi's ongoing situation with Barcelona ahead of a potential summer offer.

The Argentina star was involved in a row with Barca sporting director Eric Abidal over his claims players forced the dismissal of coach Ernesto Valverde.

City maintain they would be at the head of the queue for Messi's signature because of his strong relationship with manager Pep Guardiola.

Together Messi and Guardiola won La Liga three times and the Champions League twice in four seasons at Camp Nou between 2008 and 2012.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is reportedly planning to offload three key players in the summer.

Sources say senior stars including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil are all threatened.

Arteta believes his underperforming squad needs major revamp after assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the players he inherited from former boss Unai Emery.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has insisted that contract negotiations with Lewis Hamilton will only begin this month.

Earlier, it was rumoured that the 6-time world champion had rejected Mercedes' offer of a new two-season deal at 50 million dollars per year.

Meanwhile, he dismissed speculation about Mercedes' withdrawal from F1, saying the German marque will definitely be on the grid next year.
