Let's Be Realistic About Our Olympic Results
Aug 13, 2024
Our Olympic chef de mission wants people to be realistic about our athletes’ achievements at the Paris Games.
Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin says the criticism leveled at our Olympians is unwarranted, because they managed to punch above their weight.
He gave the example of our badminton players, who earned bronze medals despite being ranked lower than their opponents.
Datuk Hamidin also says that Malaysia must start preparing now, for our campaign at the next Olympics in 2028.
He reckons that this is the only way to improve on our performances, and hopefully win our first-ever Olympic gold medal.
Malaysia ended the Paris Olympics with two bronze medals.
This is compared to 2020 Tokyo Games, where we earned one silver and one bronze.
Our best Olympic outing so far was in Rio 2016, when we earned 4 silver and one bronze.

Meanwhile, BAM says it will not offer any excuses after its players missed its target of winning a Paris Games gold medal.
It will instead focus on improving their performances in future competitions.

And finally, Malaysian Badminton Academy chief Rexy Mainaky insists that Goh Tze Fei-Nur Izzuddin will remain under BAM for now.
This, following rumours that the men’s doubles pair could quit the national setup and turn pro.
